Reflection With Curtis

Everyday I go to El Centro Community College in Downtown Dallas with my mentor for a summer program; it is a great experience. I will be in the 9th grade this fall and attending El Centro Middle College. I will have 18 college hours before I graduate from high school through this program.

My mentor David Herman is one of the greatest photographers I know. He teaches classes at the college during the summer. I like working with him at El Centro; he really knows kids.

David Herman takes kids and gives them a new lens on life; he shows them something beautiful in their community.

At El Centro he teaches us how to edit video and still images. It is a hard process; we get graded and critiqued on everything we do.
I like photography; it gives us a sense of responsibility.

News About Current Situation in Haiti...

By Jesseka Lipscomb

Haiti was in horrible shape before the earthquake; imagine what shape they are in now. I don’t mean to sound brash. The first independent Black Country has had to pay a price for winning its freedom.

Haiti is the most under-deserved country in the world. Individuals and families bring in a mere $100 a year for working menial jobs. I know that my mom puts a lot of that money in our gas tank now. So, you see what I am saying...

There is no reliable or public transportation. Everything was already in a mess Haiti; when the earthquake came it doubled environmentally, financially, and culturally.

The health problems in Haiti are at an all time high. They don’t have many doctors who are educated. Researching different articles, it has been reported Haiti has people (mostly white) who know a bit about medicine that are helping out with the health problems from the earthquake.

I think that  a lot of the money that has been sent to Haiti has been set aside for rebuilding the country with a western identity.

From the Perspective of a Teenage Girl Named Sasha

Film Review: Good Hair

Bronner Brothers is a company that presents yearly events to showcase hair and show people how to use certain hair products. Many black people get perms at a young age to ‘relax’ their hair. I had the opportunity to review the the documentary, Good Hair, by Chris Rock in The Arthello Beck Gallery, at The South Dallas Cultural Center.

A relaxer is mostly made of sodium hydroxide. The Dudley School of Cosmetology teaches the young students how to design, cut, straighten, and relax manikins first before they start to style real women’s hair.

They say that a burn from a perm is a very excruciating burn-feeling, but I personally wouldn’t know, because I have never had a perm on my hair.

I have learned through my process with natural hair and reading about perms… Perms could burn your scalp and damage your roots.

Most of the famous hair companies are owned by either Caucasians or Koreans. Most of the females that wear weave, their hair comes from temples in India that have people tonsure their hair. Tonsure is a public sacrifice of the hair to the gods. Or they might get the hair from sleeping girls that have gotten ‘robbed’ of their hair. The weave capitol of the world is Los Angeles.

I personally believe that natural hair is better, because it’s easier to handle. If natural hair gets frizzy you can just put it in a ponytail, but if weave gets frizzy it’s hard to put it back to the way it was.

I liked this film and recommend that young girls watch this film and see where they fit (or if you don't) in Chris Rock's, Good Hair.
